KfW Projects in Serbia
Energy efficiency through ecological coal quality management
Donor: Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
Partners: Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS)
Project period: 2012 – 2021
Challenges
- Need for environmentally sound coal quality management in Kolubara coal mining.
- Significant pollution from CO2, SO2, NOX emissions due to suboptimal quality of lignite composition mainly used in the Nikola Tesla Power Station.
Approach
Introduction of an open pit coal quality management system in the western part of the Kolubara mining basin. Coal-fired power plants should receive a uniform coal quality for energy production.
The total cost of the project is EUR 182 million (KfW: EUR 74 million, EBRD co-financing: EUR 80 million and EPS: EUR 28 million).
Results
The project enables more efficient and cleaner energy production
