A panel discussion dedicated to the topic of monitoring the implementation of the new Personal Data Protection Law was held in Niš on Monday, 23 January 2023, in the presence of the Commissioner Milan Marinović, Deputy Commissioner Sanja Unković, as well as representatives of the Commissioner’s Office, personal data controllers from Niš, as well as representatives of civil society organizations and the media. The aim of the event was to review the application of the new Law on the Protection of Personal Data so far and consider the possibilities for improving the application in the future.

The organization of the panel discussion was supported by the Strengthening Rule of Law in Serbia project (EU FOR FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION AND FOR FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS), a project jointly funded by the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is responsible for the implementation of project activities related to the protection of personal data.

At the panel discussion, the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Protection of Personal Data Milan Marinović presented a report on the Commissioner’s activities in the previous two years, and the Deputy Commissioner Sanja Unković spoke about the Commissioner’s role and remit, with emphasis on personal data protection. Representatives of the Commissioner’s Office from the Sector for Oversight of Personal Data Protection and the Sector for Harmonization of Regulations and Normative Affairs also participated in the panel discussion.

The panel discussions, which will be held in the forthcoming period in 15 selected local self-government units and supported by the project, are particularly important for raising the awareness of the general public and informing citizens.
